I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy Lucy Foley, The Writer’s Retreat by Julia Bartz, Ruth Ware, and Riley Sager.ĭead of Winter will be available July 11, 2023. Because of that, a lot of the book felt predictable. While overall I think the story is well-written, I have read a number of books with a similar premise and I guessed the twist about a third of the way into the book. UNTIL GUESTS START TO DISAPPEAR Getting snowed in at a beautiful, rustic mountain chalet doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world, especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a cozy fire, and company to keep you warm. The previous books that I have read by Darcy Coates have all been firmly in the horror genre, but Dead of Winter is definitely more of a thriller. When the tour guide’s head is found skewered on a tree the next morning, everyone is desperate to stay alive and find out who the killer is. With one of their group already lost in the storm and presumed dead, tensions are high from the get go. When a snow storm hits unexpectedly, the group is forced to take shelter in an abandoned cabin. A bunch of strangers snowed in at a remote cabin- what could go wrong?ĭead of Winter follows a tour group headed to a remote lodge in the Rocky Mountains for a relaxing two week vacation.
